CBSE starts exam helpline to help students cope with Exam Stress!

With Board exams approaching, CBSE is leaving no stone unturned to help students put their best foot forward. The CBSE started its helpline on Feb 1 to help students deal with anxiety and syllabus issues, suggest time management techniques and also provide advice on career guidance.

The CBSE exam helpline can be accessed at a toll-free number 1800-180-3456 between 8 a.m. and midnight. The number will be operational till April 16. CBSE has planned its exam helpline in 2 phases-while the first phase is live now, in its second phase after the declaration of results, the helpline will be geared to counsel students who are feeling low after not performing well in the exams.

Soaring expectations, increasing levels of competition and a widening gap between parents and children are some of the factors that are contributing to increasing levels of stress among students. It is common knowledge that some amount of stress is necessary for students to perform well. However, if the stress levels go beyond what a student can cope with, it may result in visible behavioural changes such as the child may become withdrawn and non-communicative, he/she may lose interest in food etc. The core objective of all exam Helplines is to help students make a realistic evaluation of the situation and not to view these exams and their performance in the same as signaling the end of the world!

So, all you students preparing for your Board Exams, worry not cos’ there is plenty of ‘Help’ at hand. In addition to the CBSE Exam Helpline, there are NGOs such as ‘Snehi’ and ‘Aasra’ who are running exam Helplines for students in distress. While Aasra’s 24X7 helpline can be reached at 91-22-27546669, Snehi runs Disha exam helpline on the number 011-65978181. Disha is active from Feb 1 till March 3.

CBSE changes exam pattern for class XII History paper

News for all you students in CBSE class XII appearing for your History paper this year! Starting this year CBSE has modified the exam pattern for the class XII History exam. The following changes have been made in the paper that is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, March 14, 2012-

Each question in the long answer section would now carry 10 marks as compared to 8 marks earlier and the suggested word limit for each long answer has been enhanced to 500 words (earlier word limit 250 words).
The number of very short answer questions of 2 marks has been reduced from 5 to 3.

A Good Result In Class XII Exams Becomes Important For IIT Aspirants!

There is news for all you students preparing to get into the IITs or any of the other engineering colleges! Beginning 2013, you can no longer afford to ignore your class XII exams. It has been decided that at least 40% weightage will be given to class XII marks for admission to the 15 IITs.

A common aptitude-cum-advanced knowledge test is all set to replace the IIT-JEE and AIEEE in 2013. The single Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) proposed for admission into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)/National Institutes of Technology/Indian Institute of Science Education and Research/Indian Institute of Information Technology and state government-run engineering colleges, will be based on a system of varying weightages to class XII results.

Thus, while there would be single test for admission, class XII weightage would have variations that would cater to the needs of the different engineering colleges and state governments. The variations in the weightages have been devised to deal with the different systems of evaluation in each state. Put simply, the weightage given to class XII results would be different for admission to IIT and different for other engineering colleges.

So, whatever the ‘weightage band’ one thing is clear – good grades in school can now go a long way in realizing your career goals! Schools across have welcomed this move, as they feel that now the students will start focusing on their class XII exams and not blindly run after coaching centres that merely “equip” the candidates to crack competitive exams, caring little for concept-based teaching.

A single exam would also mean that as students you do not have to prepare for multiple exams! A step in the right direction, would you say?

DU Launches New E-Learning Online Portal

New Delhi: To enable Information and Communications Technology (ICT) based educationin the varsity, Delhi University (DU) has introduced e-classes for its students, which have been uploaded on its online portal.

A one-day workshop on the launch of the e-classes was held recently in which almost 40 teachers from various colleges under the university participated. During the course of the workshop, the teachers present were familiarized about the process of registering on the online portal.

These teachers would be called DU e-learning portal coordinators and will work as a link between DU's Institute of Life Long Learning (ILLL) and DU colleges.

DU Vice Chancellor Deepak Pental inaugurated the workshop and spoke at length about the importance of ICT in higher education. "ICT is extremely important in higher education and can help in answering many problems that affect the quality of education that is being imparted in the university," he said.

He further added that the e-classes being started by the varsity would help in empowering teachers to handle the teacher-student interactions in an efficient manner.

Calling the initiative to introduce e-classes the most significant feature of the DUonline portal, ILLL Director A.K. Bakshi said that the interactivity aspect of the e-classes is a new feature that will benefit both students as well as teachers.

He explained that as teachers have only 50-55 minutes to teach per class, several doubts ands questions which students might have remain unanswered. The online e-classes will now enable students to ask and clear their doubts and also to hold healthy online discussions which can continue for as long as the students want.

The e-learning portal started by DU has several interactive media features available free of charge in four sections, viz-a-viz, e-lessons, e-labs, e-quizzes and e-lectures. The newly introduced e-classes would only be available to DU students who have joined the portal by contacting their e-learning portal coordinator.

The facility to join the portals would also be made available to teachers and students from the postgraduate department.

Thus if adding 1/2 and 3/8, we need to convert the 1/2 into an equivalent fraction with 8 as its denominator. We simply ask ourselves what we need to multiply 2 by to get 8. The answer is easy and is 4. Thus we use 4/4, 1 in disguised form to multiply and convert 1/2 into the equivalent fraction 4/8. We can then add 4/8 and 3/8 to get 7/8.

Reducing fractions is another important aspect to mastering these numbers. Reducing fractions allows us to deal with fractions in lowest terms. This is important because in mathematics we always want our answers in the most simplified form and reducing fractions permits this. Mathematics is complicated as it is, thus providing the most simple form is always important. Could you imagine how much more complicated this field would be if we did not do this? At any rate, simplifying fractions simply requires that we factor out the GCF (Greatest Common Factor) from both numerator and denominator and canceling. The GCF is the largest factor common to both numerator and denominator. For example, 20/25 can be reduced to 4/5 because the GCF of both 20 and 25 is 5. Thus we write 20/25 = (4x5)/(5x5) and cancel the 5 to get 4/5. Similarly for 38/57, we can express this as (19x2)/(19x3) and cancel the 19 to get 2/3. Obviously, it is easier to work with smaller numbers than larger ones, as many times we use the results of one operation for further operations. Thus 2/3 is easier to work with than 38/57, and thus the reason for reducing fractions becomes evident.

Another important aspect of fractions is multiplying and dividing them. This is probably one of the easiest operations involving fractions because we need not concern ourselves with common denominators. To multiply two fractions, we simply multiply the numerators and then the denominators. It should be pointed out that we should first try to reduce the fractions so that our end result is in lowest terms. Doing this first, also simplifies the multiplications. For example, (38/57)x(20/25) is easier to do if we first reduce each fraction as mentioned above to 2/3 and 4/5, respectively. We then multiply 2x4 and 3x5 to get 8/15 as our answer, and this is in lowest terms. If you do not simplify first, you are looking at multiplying 38x20 and 57x25, which are harder multiplications than the ones we did.

Dividing fractions is really no different than multiplying them, with one exception. Before we do the multiplication, we invert the numerator and denominator of the second fraction. We then simply multiply. Thus (9/15)/(8/16) is the same as (9/15)x 16/8). Let's reduce and multiply. We have (3/5)x(2/1) = 6/5.

Under CCE, students are required to take two summative and four formative assessments that may include paper-pencil tests along with other formative assessments tools such as classroom quizzes, projects etc. However, the students who wish to appear for board exams have to send in their requisition to their respective schools stating that they want to appear for Summative Assessment-II conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education.

Grading Pattern & Assessment System under CCE

As mentioned above, students who have opted for CCE have to appear for summative & formative assessments on the basis of which students will be graded for their performance. The entire academic year of CBSE 10th class is divided into two semesters. For the current academic year, a weightage of 40% is being attached to the first semester where as the second semester carries a 60% weightage. However, from next academic year both semesters will carry equal weightage i.e. 50% each. The grading system adopted by CBSE is based on a 9 point scale. Students who score between 91-100 marks will be awarded grade A1, where as students who score between 81-90, 71-80, 61-70, 51-60, 41-50, 33-40, 21-32 & 20 and below will be awarded grades A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, D, E1 & E2 respectively. With each grade certain grade points are also awarded, for example students who score an A1 grade will be awarded 10 grade points, a student with A2 grade will get 9 grade points so on and so forth. No grade points shall be awarded for grades E1 & E2. Grade points in each subject will be accumulated and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) will be arrived at.

With a view to promote elementary education in the country, the Indian government has also prohibited child labor to protect children from working under unhygienic conditions. However, both free education and ban on child labor are difficult to be enforced simultaneously due to poor economic disparity and social conditions. Moreover, shortage of adequate resources and lack of political support are some of the reasons due to which the system has been adversely affected by the gaps that include high teacher-student ratio, poor infrastructure and insufficient teacher training. In fact, professionals from established institutes are often called to support vocational training for these kids.

The government has initiated Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in 2001 with a view to provide instigate the education system and make its reach wider and more accessible to every child.
